Nantymoel 23 v Pencoed 36

This Division 2 West Central match opened in bright sunshine in the Ogmore Valley and spectators did not have to wait long for the opening match score. Pencoed following scrum pressure close to the home line were awarded a penalty and scrum half Kyle Barrett took a quick tap penalty and No8 Gareth Prentice crashed over wide out, outside half Adam Williams adding a fine conversion. Pencoed returned to the attack from the restart, centre Shane Izatt bursting through midfield and a home offence at the breakdown saw Williams increase the Pencoed lead with a penalty goal. Izatt again put Pencoed on the front foot with a twenty metre burst into the Nantymoel half and good link play from second row Ricky Somers saw Prentice break away down the left hand touchline and a well timed inside pass saw Barrett race over and Pencoed led 0-15 in as many minutes. Nantymoel outside half Shaun Webber then put his side on the scoreboard with a penalty goal before Pencoed increased their lead, flanker Rhys Watkins winning a turnover for full back Rhys Thomas to take play into the home 22 where flanker Ricky Evans capitalised on a home fumble to win possession and swift use of the ball through the threequarter line saw centre Morgan Jones put Jamie Pensom over wide out, Williams adding the extras. Webber then added a penalty before the home side missed a gilt edged scoring opportunity wide out, the pass going to ground with a three man overlap. Webber then kicked his third penalty goal to reduce the deficit before the increasingly dominant Pencoed front row of skipper Kieron Moore, hooker Tony Middleton, and James Tredray, ably supported by the efforts of their second rows Dano Howells and Somers laid the foundations for the next score, No 8 Prentice the recipient following another powerful scrummage surge, Williams converted and Pencoed led 9-29 at the interval. Izatt was posing all sorts of problems for the home side with his incisive running and following a telling break into the Nantymoel 22 Pencoed introduced left wing replacement Rhys Clarke through midfield and Clarke popped up for a second time in the move to dummy his way over, Williams converted. Despite the match scoreline of 9-36 the home side then finished the match well and were rewarded with two late tries from replacement scrum half Lewis Carson and Alex Williams, Webber adding both conversions . For Pencoed Gareth Prentice was chosen by coaches Aaron Halse and Alan Cattle as their Man of the match with Shane Izatt receiving the supporters accolade. On saturday Pencoed host Brynamman at the Recreation Ground, 2.30pm k.o. Match Report: T.R.
